A 46-year-old male is facing charges of arson after a working fire in West Kildonan on Wednesday night.
At approximately 11:15 p.m. on January 29, patrolling North District General Patrol officers observed a working fire in the 800 block of Leila Avenue.
WFPS were called and put out the fire. Officers located a male suspect in the 2300 block of McPhillips Street who matched the description of the suspect that started the fire. He was arrested without incident.
Officers found approximately nine grams of methamphetamine, which has an estimated street value of $450. A blue lighter was also seized as evidence.
The Major Crimes Unit assumed and continued the investigation.
During the investigation, officers learned that the suspect went to a retail business in the 2300 block of McPhillips Street and set a pile of cardboard on fire inside an unlocked refuse room. Damage is estimated at approximately $10,000.
The suspect also set a garbage bin on fire near a commercial business in the 800 block of Leila Avenue resulting in approximately $5,000 worth of damage.
A 46-year-old male from Winnipeg is charged with the following:
- Arson Causing Damage to Property x 2
- Possession of Incendiary Material
- Possession of Scheduled Substance – Methamphetamine
- Warrant – Fail to Comply with Probation Order
He was detained in custody.
