Manitoba Hydro worker killed on the job

A Manitoba Hydro employee has died while working in the Interlake region.

The worker, whose identity remains undisclosed, was involved in tasks related to a power outage when the fatal incident occurred on Thursday morning, the crown corporation says in a news release.

Manitoba Hydro President and CEO Allan Danroth expressed the company’s grief and commitment to safety, stating, “Our deepest sympathies go out to the individual’s loved ones, friends, and coworkers. We are devastated to lose a member of our Manitoba Hydro family.”

Danroth further emphasized the company’s dedication to safety, noting, “The safety of our employees and customers is our top priority, and we are committed to fully investigating the cause of this tragedy.”

The CEO assured the public that Manitoba Hydro is cooperating with the appropriate authorities to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.

In Manitoba, workplace safety remains a pressing issue, with approximately 1,500 serious incidents reported annually across various sectors. Nationally, an average of 945 workers have died each year due to work-related causes since 2009, reflecting the significant risks faced by workers in physically demanding and potentially dangerous jobs.

As the investigation continues, Manitoba Hydro has pledged to support the family and colleagues of the deceased employee while focusing on preventing future tragedies through enhanced safety measures.
