Manitoba RCMP mourn the loss of a former furry colleague

Manitoba RCMP are mourning the loss of a former furry colleague. 

On Tuesday, RCMP announced the passing of one of their long-time police service dogs, Erlo aka Earl.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police in Manitoba say Earl began his career in 2015 in the Lower Mainland of B.C., before arriving in Manitoba, where he worked in the Selkirk area. 

“Earl loved tracking, criminal apprehension, and was a superstar at searching. He was also trained in explosive detection,” said Manitoba RCMP in a post on Facebook. “Earl has too many “saves” to mention, but on one of his first operational tracks in Manitoba, he saved an elderly male with dementia who had gone missing.”

In 2015, Earl retired and went to live with his handler, Cpl. Matt Estrada in 2022.

“In retirement, he learned to settle into the living room full-time, and while his mobility wasn’t like it used to be – his mind was still as sharp as ever, and he never lost that desire to work,” said Manitoba RCMP. “Thank you, for your service Earl. You made us all proud.”
