The City of Winnipeg is officially starting construction this week to open the iconic Portage and Main intersection to pedestrians following pre-construction traffic signals and underground work that concluded last week.
As early as Wednesday, Dec. 4, crews are expected to install the first long-term lane closures. Following the lane closures, sewer repairs and demolition work on the existing pedestrian barricades will start in the coming days.
Over the next six months, traffic will be restricted at various locations throughout the intersection.
This week, motorists can expect restrictions:
Main Street
- Continued closure of the northbound curb lane at Portage Avenue
- New closure of the southbound curb lane between Portage Avenue and Pioneer Avenue
Portage Avenue
- New closure of the eastbound curb lane between Fort Street and Main Street
Portage Avenue East
- Continued closure of eastbound curb lane between Main Street and Westbrook Street
- A permanent no-right-turn restriction is now in place from northbound Main Street onto Portage Avenue East – this accompanies the existing left-turn restriction from southbound Main Street onto Portage Avenue East
Drivers can keep up-to-date on changing lane closures in the intersection by visiting winnipeg.ca/laneclosures.
Winnipeggers are encouraged to use alternate routes and plan ahead for delays.
