Southern Manitoba could see over 50 mm of rain Monday with thunderstorms

Winnipeg and southern Manitoba will most likely receive a lot of rain in a short period of time later in the afternoon, throughout the evening and overnight.

“It’s a fairly moisture-laden airmass that’s moving up from the United States,” says Meteorologist with Environment Canada (EC), Chris Stammers. “Looks like there’s going to be some thunderstorm activity forming, it’s already forming in North Dakota and that’s going to be moving northward throughout the day.”

Stammers says that southern Manitoba could see roughly 50 mm of rain within a short period of time.

“It’s kind of impossible at this point to nail down exactly where. But anywhere where it forms will see a fair bit of precipitation with it. Certainly, the potential is there for 50 mm or more within an hour or two.”

On Monday late morning, we will most likely see a thunderstorm watch and warning for certain areas across the southern part of the province.

“Getting all that [rain] in a short time frame can cause localized flooding.”

The average temperature for this time of year in Winnipeg is highs of about 18 degrees Celcius in the day. The unseasonably warm temperatures will stay for about a week longer before the cooler air starts to move in across Manitoba, according to EC.
