The Winnipeg Humane Society has reached critical capacity after more than 130 dogs were recently brought into their care.
This large removal was conducted by the Office of the Provincial Veterinarian -Animal Welfare and is currently under investigation.
The shelter has now reached 611 animals in care. Of those, 281 are in the WHS, and 330 are in foster care or in partner boarding or vet facilities.
“We are asking for your support and understanding as we navigate this ongoing emergency,” said the WHS in a statement on their website.
They are currently looking for donations to help support the cost of food, medical care, enrichment and the additional staffing required to ensure the well-being of the large volume of dogs and other animals in their care.
As a result of the recent seizure, they can no longer take owner surrenders, and are encouraging the public to hold onto strays. The WHS says they will provide food for anyone willing to do this.
This year, investigations and emergency response have brought in 678 animals to the WHS, not including the 68 Maltese removed by the City of Winnipeg Animal Services.
Anyone interested in helping out is encouraged to refrain from calling, e-mailing or messaging. Instead, they are asked to visit the Winnipeg Humane Society website.
