Winnipeg store employee charged after assaulting shoplifter

A store employee is facing charges after a shoplifting incident turned violent. 

At around 8 p.m. on Saturday, Winnipeg police say a 41-year-old man entered a commercial business in the 600 block of Wiliam Avenue and left with stolen merchandise. A 28-year-old employee armed himself with an edged weapon and confronted the man outside.  

The fight escalated to the point where the store employee struck the victim multiple times with the edged weapon. 

Central District General Patrol officers were patrolling in the West Alexander neighbourhood when they came upon the fight.

The 28-year-old was arrested. The 41-year-old was transported to hospital in unstable condition. He has since been upgraded to stable. 

The suspect is facing a charge of aggravated assault and possession of a weapon. He was released on an undertaking as mandated by the Criminal Code.

The Major Crimes Unit has taken over the investigation.
