A 38-year-old woman is dead after being struck by a freight train during the early morning hours on Canada Day.
The Winnipeg Police Service responded to the Union Station for the report of a person struck by a train near the 200 block of Stradbrook Avenue just before 4 a.m.
Emergency personnel attended with Central District officers and were directed by rail crews to the 38-year-old female who had suffered fatal injuries.
Investigators initially believed that the woman had gotten off a passenger train when struck by a freight train being operated in the opposite direction. However, police say they have now confirmed that she was not travelling on and did not disembark a passenger train. Police say the Winnipeg woman was walking on the railroad track when she was struck by the moving freight train which did not have sufficient time to avoid the collision.
The woman has now been identified and her family has been notified. Police say they have ruled the incident accidental and no charges will be laid.
