Western Manitoba received most of the snowfall from the recent low-pressure system with Winnipeg receiving only a dusting of snow.
“With this storm, western Manitoba was set up to get the worst of it,” says Shannon Moodie, a meteorologist with Environment and Climate Change Canada. “Heavy snowfall, really gusty winds, blowing snow, and a lot of travel not recommended. For the Red River Valley we stayed more in the warmer air.”
With the low-pressure system that moved across western Manitoba last night and into today, many highways are closed with a few school closures as well.
“Just recently the Winnipeg Airport has started reporting snow but our temperature is zero so we’re seeing that really wet snow right now.”
For Winnipeg and southern Manitoba the temperature is supposed to remain above freezing throughout Wednesday afternoon, reaching a high of two degrees.
“The low that brought all this nasty weather is supposed to weaken today. So with that we’re going to see weather improve. Later this afternoon towards the evening we’re going to see temperatures slightly drop.”
Most of the precipitation will end around midnight, according to Moodie, before the temperatures drop to minus four with a windchill of minus 10.
“We’re really going to see that weather improve through the morning and early afternoon. The remaining warnings that we have out for this system will be ended throughout the day.”
The next few days will have below-freezing temperatures, making the weather a lot closer to normal temperatures for this time of year.
