Funnel clouds possible in southwest Manitoba: ECCC

Funnel clouds are possible for southwest Manitoba on Thursday.

According to an advisory from Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC), conditions are ideal for funnel clouds to develop.

“A low pressure system over southern Manitoba is expected to trigger isolated to scattered thunderstorms this afternoon which will carry a risk for funnel clouds early in their development,” the advisory reads. “The threat for funnel clouds will diminish early this evening.”

Areas under the advisory include Brandon, Minnedosa, Virden and Glenboro. A full list can be found online.

ECCC said the funnel clouds are created by weak rotraion under the storms or rapidly growing clouds, and is not normally a danger near the ground. However, there is a chance the rotation could intensify and form a weak landspout tornado. ECCC said warnings and watches will be issued if conditions are ideal for larger tornado development.

ECCC adds people should be prepared to take shelter if funnel clouds are spotted.
