Police were called to the 400 block of Kennedy Street near Cumberland Avenue, less than a block away from Sister MacNamara Elementary School at shortly before noon on Tuesday, where officers found Ricky Dwayne Mancheese who had sustained life-threatening injuries resulting from a stabbing. Officers immediately provided emergency medical care before an ambulance arrived, but Mancheese died in hospital.

It is believed that Mancheese and his wife were walking home to meet their 12-year-old son for lunch when the assault happened. A vigil was held Wednesday night there near the elementary school where his son attended.

A GoFundMe campaign has been set up to help financially support his wife and son. The fundraiser was created by Luanne Karn, who was Mancheese’s teacher in an adult education program for the last two years, helping him finish his English and Math in order for him to become a security guard.

“Ricky was loving, funny, and committed to his family,” said Karn in the GoFundMe post. “He was a gentle giant who cared about everyone he met and had a genuine desire to support others around him. He will be terribly missed by his friends, family, and his community.”

Homicide Unit investigators identified a suspect and a 36-year-old Winnipeg man was arrested without incident on Wednesday at around 6 p.m. He has been charged with second-degree murder.

He was detained in custody.

The Homicide Unit continues to investigate. Anyone with information is asked to contact investigators at 204-986-6508 or anonymously at Crime Stoppers 204-786-TIPS or winnipegcrimestoppers.org.
