The helicopters are being used to detect individuals crossing into Canada illegally between official ports of entry and human smuggling networks. They are also tasked with identifying and stopping the trafficking of contraband, including drugs, across the border.
Equipped with RCMP officers, the helicopters can respond quickly to suspicious activity near the border. They will also support the Integrated Border Enforcement Team by directing ground officers to areas of concern.
Residents living near the border may regularly notice the helicopter’s presence. The RCMP has assured the public that these flights are part of routine operations and pose no safety concerns.
Assistant Commissioner Lisa Moreland, Regional Commander of Federal Policing for the Northwest Region, emphasized the benefits of the new resource. She said the helicopter significantly improves the RCMP’s ability to detect and respond to threats while bolstering border security. She also confirmed that additional resources and technologies would be deployed as needed to maintain the integrity of the border.
This initiative aligns with the federal government’s broader strategy of enhancing border security through advanced surveillance and increased enforcement.
