“The homicide of a two-year-old girl is not just a loss for her family, but a profound loss to the community,” RCMP Major Crime Services Lead Investigator Sgt. Laura LeDrew said Thursday in a statement. “This is a senseless crime that will have a profound impact on the community, first responders and investigating officers.

“Our No. 1 priority right now is seeking justice for the victim.”

RCMP said they were called due to a suspicious death on the Bloodvein First Nation on Jan. 24 around 8:30 p.m., after a toddler was brought to the local nursing station with serious injuries, in the community located more than 250 kilometres north of Winnipeg.

The girl was pronounced dead before officers arrived at the nursing station.

On Saturday, officers from RCMP Major Crime Services and Forensic Identification Services travelled to the community and executed a search warrant at the home where the child had been living.

On Sunday, the results of the autopsy confirmed the victim died from “injuries as a result of a homicide,” police said.

On Wednesday, RCMP arrested a 56-year-old woman from the Bloodvein First Nation who had been charged with second-degree murder. Police say the woman was the “primary caregiver” for the victim at the time of her death.

The woman is in custody pending a court date.

Bloodvein RCMP, along with RCMP Major Crime Services continue to investigate.
