The Killing Roads is a self-funded film from Canadian-Israeli director and producer Igal Hecht, from Toronto. It will be shown Oct. 8 at the Berney Theatre on the Asper Jewish Community Campus at 7 p.m. Tickets are available through Event Brite.

“This documentary explores the harrowing experiences of victims, survivors, and first responders during the brutal terrorist attacks orchestrated by Hamas and other Palestinian terrorists on Oct. 7, 2023,” Hecht said in an email. “Set against the backdrop of the main roads where these atrocities occurred, the film captures the raw emotions and resilience of those affected by the violence.”

The film is for those 18 years of age or older and comes with a viewer discretion warning. Hecht will introduce his work and host a question and answer session following the screening.

He said the project “seeks to reveal the truth about the atrocities committed by Palestinian terrorists, including Hamas and Islamic Jihad, and confront the denial that has persisted in Canada, the U.S., and globally.”

An estimated 1,139 people were killed in the Gaza incursion, including 364 civilians attending the Nova music festival. About 250 more were taken hostage.

The documentary retraces the final moments of Israelis along highways 232 and 34 near Gaza, with new interviews with survivors, relatives, and first responders and video footage taken that day, both by terrorists and victims.

Hamas has said the attack was in response to the continued Israeli occupation and the blockade of the Gaza Strip, and other issues.

Israel responded by clearing militants and invading Gaza. Estimates from the Gaza Ministry of Health say more than 40,000 Palestinians have been killed in the war and Israel disputes that claim, with nearly all of the 2.3 million Palestinians displaced.

Its response also led to Lebanon, and included the assassination of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah, which led to Iranian missile strikes on Israel and fears of a wider Middle East conflict currently playing out.

The Killing Roads was launched free of charge on social media platforms and website thekillingroads.com on Oct. 1.
