Police said a male entered a taxi in the 1400 block of Notre Dame Avenue. During the fare, the driver was verbally berated and a man armed himself with the vehicle’s jack from the trunk.

When the taxi stopped near the intersection of St. James Street and Wellington Avenue, the driver called for assistance from another taxi operator and police. The man exited the vehicle, the driver-side window was smashed with the jack and the driver was forcibly removed. Police said the jack was swung at the driver, but no contact was made. The driver sustained a minor hand injury from broken glass but did not require medical attention. A second taxi’s trunk was struck with the jack, causing damage.

The second taxi was then stolen but the vehicle collided with a snowbank in the 1400 block of St. James Street, leaving it inoperable and police said a man attempted to flee on foot but was arrested nearby.

A 34-year-old male from Winnipeg has been charged with robbery, theft of a motor vehicle, mischief over $5,000, and mischief under $5,000. He was released as mandated by the Criminal Code.
