Child escapes suspicious man, while walking home for lunch

The Winnipeg Police received a report of a suspicious man who confronted a middle-school-aged child walking home during lunchtime on Tuesday. The incident occurred shortly after noon when the child was walking southbound on Banning Street and then headed westbound on Einarson Avenue.

The child was approached by a stranger who said something to him before grabbing hold of the child. A brief struggle ensued, and the child managed to break free and run home. The child reported the incident to a parent and was not physically injured.

The suspect was last seen heading northbound on Banning Street near St. Matthews Avenue, possibly crossing through Orioles Park. He is described as a male wearing a checkered or plaid shirt, blue jeans, and a blue ski mask covering his face.

Winnipeg Police have been in contact with Greenway School, and the administration has informed the school’s families about the incident. Parents and caregivers are being encouraged to discuss safety plans with their children, emphasizing the importance of calling for help and reporting any suspicious individuals or interactions to a trusted adult.

The Child Abuse Unit has taken over the investigation.
