Hon. Glen Simard, Manitoba’s Minister for Municipal and Northern Relations, highlighted the importance of arenas in fostering community connections. He noted the investments will allow people of all ages to participate in activities like skating and hockey while creating lasting memories. Mayor Scott Gillingham echoed the sentiment, reflecting on his experiences as a young hockey player and emphasizing the role of arenas in building friendships, teaching teamwork, and supporting future athletes.
The upgrades for the 2024–2025 season include new lighting at Sam Southern and Terry Sawchuk arenas, roof replacements at Century and Charlie Gardiner arenas, and new score clocks at several locations. Improvements were also made to ice plants, ice controls, electrical systems, and carbon monoxide sensors across multiple facilities.
Plans for 2025 include adding accessible washrooms at Sam Southern Arena, more ice plant upgrades, and concrete repairs. These efforts are part of a broader initiative approved in 2022, with $8 million allocated for arena repairs and maintenance under the provincially funded Recreation and Library Facility Investment Strategy. Future phases will expand assessments and repairs to community centre arenas and further enhance City-operated facilities.
