Community leader arrested again for breaching bail conditions

The executive director of the Yazidi Association of Manitoba, Hadji Hesso, is facing fresh legal troubles after being charged with breaching bail conditions and uttering threats.

The Winnipeg Police Service Hesso was arrested Sunday night arrest after a complainant was threatened at her home.

Hesso was previously charged with sexual assault on Oct. 4, following a statement from the complainant. The allegations stem from incidents reported to have taken place during the summer of 2023. The complainant, known to Hesso for over a decade, accused him of repeated unwanted sexual contact.

Following the initial charge, Hesso was released on conditions that he have no contact with the complainant. Shortly after, he was accused of breaching those conditions by allegedly sending a relative to the complainant’s home with a bribe to withdraw the sexual assault charge. The relative is also alleged to have made threats about damaging her reputation within the Yazidi community if she refused.

Police rearrested Hesso on Oct. 17, and his bail application was initially denied. The court expressed concerns about his ability to comply with bail conditions. After multiple appearances, he was eventually granted bail on Nov. 28.

The recent arrest raises further concerns about the enforcement of conditions and the safety of the complainant. The case continues to unfold as Hesso remains in custody.
