According to the Leger survey, 73% of Manitobans want the government to extend the tax relief for a third time.

“The poll results are crystal clear: Manitobans want to keep the tax off at the gas pumps,” said Gage Haubrich, CTF Prairie Director. “Manitoba fuel is the most affordable in the country because of the fuel tax cut. It needs to stay that way.”

The Manitoba government initially introduced the 14-cent-per-litre fuel tax cut on January 1 for six months. After two extensions, the cut is scheduled to end on December 31. The poll also asked Manitobans whether they would support making the fuel tax cut permanent, with 70% of respondents in favour.

Among those with a firm opinion on the matter, 81% support another extension of the tax cut, and 78% support making it permanent.

The impact of the fuel tax cut is significant. A two-vehicle family filling up a minivan and a pickup truck every two weeks is expected to save about $587 by the end of December. An additional three-month extension would save that same family another $147.

“Tax relief at the pumps goes a long way to help Manitobans make ends meet,” Haubrich said. “Premier Wab Kinew needs to listen to Manitobans and extend the gas tax cut so they can keep saving money.”
