On Monday at about 6 p.m., Portage la Prairie officers were alerted to a stolen vehicle out of the Selkirk area that was headed their way. It was located on Highway 1 near Highway 240 being driven at “high speeds and dangerously.”

RCMP said in a news release Tuesday traffic was stopped for the safety of motorists by the Portage diversion while they attempted to stop the vehicle.

“The stolen vehicle refused to stop and nearly struck an RCMP officer,” police said. “The suspect then drove through the ditch in an attempt to flee but got stuck.”

The driver has been charged with flight from police, assault with a weapon, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, fail to comply, and possession of property obtained by crime.

He was remanded in custody.
