Drunk driver found asleep at wheel following hit and run: RCMP

A drunk driver was found asleep at the wheel of a pickup truck after allegedly running down a motorcyclist and leaving the scene of the accident, RCMP said.

The 24-year-old motorcyclist was found with life-threatening injuries at about 12:45 a.m. on Monday, and remains in hospital in critical condition.

Selkirk RCMP said he was headed west on Highway 44 when he was struck from behind by a pickup truck about one kilometre east of Highway 59. The truck driver left the scene.

RCMP said information at the scene took officers to a Henderson Highway address, where the truck was found with the driver asleep behind the wheel.

A 30-year-old man faces charges related to impaired driving causing bodily harm and failure to stop after an accident resulting in bodily harm. He was released ahead of a Nov. 8 court date in Selkirk.

Selkirk RCMP continue to investigate.
