The campaign launched on Tuesday and continues through July, this national initiative by Canadian Blood Services seeks to harness the unique perspective of first responders, who witness firsthand the critical need for blood and blood products in emergencies.

“At times, we are the first to see the urgent need for blood that can mean the difference between life and death,” said a spokesperson from the Winnipeg Fire and Paramedic Service in a release. “Our goal is to inspire our community to join us in donating blood and potentially saving lives.”

The campaign also emphasizes the importance of stem cell donations, highlighting that over 80 diseases and disorders, including leukemia and lymphoma, can be treated with a stem cell transplant. First responders are encouraged to join the stem cell registry, potentially offering hope to patients awaiting a match.

The initiative holds personal significance for Jamie McClintock, a paramedic with Winnipeg Fire and Paramedic Service, who experienced the life-saving impact of blood donations firsthand during her battle with leukemia in 2009. After receiving over seventy-five units of blood products during her treatment, Jamie is now in remission and advocates passionately for blood donation.

Residents of Winnipeg are urged to participate in the upcoming donation events, contributing to Canada’s Lifeline and potentially making a life-changing difference for patients like Jamie and many others in need of blood and stem cell treatments.
