Glowing a fierce yellow, it can be shaped and moulded, but only with the right tools — hands-on contact would be fatal. This softened state allows for the creation of intricate designs that showcase the metal’s unique “squishiness.”

“The squishiness and plasticity of steel enable limitless creativity; organic forms emerge naturally under the hammer’s blow,” says Paolo Riva, Founder of Rootfire, Maker-in-Residence, and a long-standing member of the FabLab.

The FabLab: Thirteen years of growth

The FabLab has transformed into a pivotal hub where modern makers find the essential tools, resources, and community support to bring their ideas to life. It removes the significant financial barriers that often hinder new ventures, offering an affordable platform where entrepreneurs can prototype and refine their ideas continuously. Without it, many would face prohibitive startup costs, but here, innovation is not just accessible—it’s encouraged, making it a critical catalyst for local creativity and entrepreneurship.

With the addition of the Makers Market, it becomes more than a facility for creation; it evolves into a one-stop destination where innovators can seamlessly transition from prototype development to full-scale production and, finally, to directly selling their innovative products, all within a single, vibrant location.

“I’ve always been drawn to the design process and creating high-quality, interesting objects. Furniture is something we all use every day — it’s a necessity, but also a way to express yourself,” he says as he enjoys a cup of coffee made from beans he roasted himself.

Paolo’s unwavering dedication to his craft and the FabLab community is evident in every project he undertakes. Marney Stapley, Director of the FabLab, speaks highly of his relentless commitment and exceptional talent. “Having known Paolo for several years, I’ve witnessed firsthand his extraordinary skill and passion. As our Maker-in-Residence, he is an ideal fit. Paolo excels at transforming ideas into tangible creations, particularly when working with wood and steel, and his enthusiasm for collaboration is truly inspiring,” she says.
