HAL’S HEADLINES: More gov’t workers, same lack of services

At a time when you and I are pulling back to make ends meet, the Kinew and Trudeau governments are adding to the provincial and federal workforces. Documents obtained by the Canadian Taxpayers’ Federation say the NDP in Manitoba has hired almost 700 new employees since being elected just nine short months ago. The hirings include 109 clerks and 53 administrative assistants. The additional cost is close to $40 million a year. And in Ottawa, the civil service has grown every year under Justin Trudeau, by nearly 40 per cent since the Liberals were elected in 2015. And you know what, if we got more for the extra money spent, I wouldn’t be so pissed. But we’re not! There are more people doing the work but as far as I’m concerned, services haven’t improved at all. In fact, I think they’ve gotten worse. Government needs to behave more like we do in tough times or like a business owner would. Batten down the hatches and get through it as best you can. You sure as hell don’t add to your expenses. It’s still early for Wab Kinew who has time to prove that he’s a different kind of New Democrat. For Trudeau, it’s just more of the same which might send him to the opposition benches soon.

ICE CITY OPENS

The world’s biggest indoor snow and ice park has opened in China. Ice City is 23,800 square meters in size and it’s divided into nine themed sections with 13 different experiences. The atmosphere is said to be magical and filled with light, entertainment, gourmet food and cultural creations. This is exactly why we need to embrace winter tourism in Manitoba. Others have to build it but it just happens naturally here.

AI’S POWER DEMANDS

Artificial intelligence requires so much power that it’s straining the electrical grid in some areas. AI queries need about 10 times the electricity of traditional Google searches. The Electrical Power Research Institute says artificial intelligence is causing some energy companies to recalibrate their future projections. There’s even talk of restarting the Three Mile Island nuclear power plant which has been dormant since the infamous 1979 disaster there.

POOP NEWS

Researchers in Seattle say one to two poops a day is the “Goldilocks zone” for the average person. After analyzing 1,400 healthy adults and their gut health, Dr. Sean Gibbons says people who “went” this often had beneficial amounts of bacteria in their guts. Those who suffered with diarrhea or constipation showed higher levels of less beneficial bacteria. To promote regularity, he suggests you try a fibre-rich diet, hydration and exercise.

THE BEAR IS THE BEST!

I wouldn’t really call it a comedy but I love that The Bear got 23 Emmy nominations this week, a new record for a comedy series. My wife Jackie and I just finished the new season on Disney+. It’s so good! But believe it or not, another show had even more nominations than that. Shogun which you can also watch on Disney+ got an impressive 25 nods including best drama series. The Emmys will be awarded Sept. 15 in Hollywood. Oh, and if you’re looking for a guilty pleasure this summer, give Love Island USA a try on Crave. Happy viewing…
