HAL’S HEADLINES: What a week in federal politics!

Article content

Less than a week after PC boss Pierre Poilievre called on the other opposition parties to vote non-confidence in the minority Liberal government when parliament resumes, NDP leader Jagmeet Singh ripped up his confidence and supply agreement with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. It had to happen at some point but I think one of the reasons it happened sooner than most expected is because the New Democrats could lose the Elmwood-Transcona by-election where early voting is underway. I guarantee you that NDP candidate Leila Dance was getting an earful about the deal from voters as she knocked on doors in the riding. Insiders tell me that Tory candidate Colin Reynolds is giving Dance a real run for her money. Singh says he’ll lead his party into the next federal election even if Dance loses. I found further proof of all this when I did a deep dive into the latest polling from Angus Reid. Sample sizes are smaller provincially so margins of error are greater but in Manitoba, voter intent for the Tories has hit 50%, an increase of seven points in the past year. The New Democrats are second at 33% (+5). Trudeau’s Grits are a distant third at only 16% (-9). Singh is hoping his move will salvage some votes locally on Sept. 16 and when the next general election is held but I’m not sure it’ll work if he simply keeps supporting the Liberals on a case-by-case basis. Like Trudeau, Singh needs time to turn things around before Canadians go to the polls.

PHANTOM OF WINNIPEG

50 years later and it’s still a mystery why Phantom Of The Paradise was such a big hit in Winnipeg but almost nowhere else in the entire world. A celebration is planned for early November at the Burton Cummings Theatre when the final cut of Phantom Of Winnipeg will be screened. The documentary features Kevin Smith who will be here for the special screening. Tickets for Kevin Smith Gets Winnipegged are on sale through Ticketmaster for just $25 until Sunday morning. After that, the price goes up.

NEW LOT, NO ENTRANCE

This sounds like something Winnipeg would do. A new $66 million parking lot in England can’t be used because there’s no road connecting it to the street. Construction of the lot that fits 850 vehicles wrapped up in January but now the project is delayed until more funding is secured. Oxfordshire officials say there might not be an entrance until 2027.

NEW SEX STATS

According to new research from the Kinsey Institute, Gen Z and Boomers are having the same amount of sex. Both generations do the deed about three times per month. Gen X and Millennials get down five times a month. Kinsey says younger adults today also have a greater overall interest in kink than older people.

WE AGE IN WAVES

A new study says humans age in two waves, one at 44 years old and the other at 60. The study, published in Nature Aging, says people don’t age slowly over time. The process speeds up at those two points in a person’s life. Our metabolism slows, our skin wrinkles and our proneness to disease peaks at 44 and 60. Take it from a guy who turned 60 a few months ago, I think they’re onto something.
