HAL’S KITCHEN: Battle of the big burger festivals

Article content

Two big burger festivals get going this weekend and a third continues. Between The Buns and La Burger Week both begin on Sunday, while the much smaller Winnipeg River Burger Trail keeps going until Friday. Between The Buns is a new local competition after many years of Burger Week which is a national event. Both have over 100 local participants. I understand the appeal of both, although I’ll be honest with you, I’m really rooting for BTB. It’s way better for all involved, including The Dream Factory which will get a significant donation when all is said and done. Burger fans who take part in Between The Buns could also win Date Night For A Year worth $1,200. You can find out more at BetweenTheBunsMb.ca. Good luck to everyone!

DOMINO’S SUPPORTS VARIETY

Once again this year, Domino’s has created two pizza deals for the month of September in support of Variety, the Children’s Charity of Manitoba. The deals start at $20.99 and include one or two pizzas and cheesy bread. As much as $10 from each deal will be donated to Variety. Go to Dominos.ca starting Sunday and use codes KIDS3 or KIDS4 in the coupon box.

HOT DOG HEAD-TO-HEAD

It’s a nice long weekend for the official end of summer so I hope you’re outside but if you do turn on a TV, don’t forget about Chestnut vs. Kobayashi: Unfinished Beef on Netflix. It goes Monday at 2 p.m. It’s the first time the two rivals have met in a hot dog eating competition in 15 years. I doubt I’ll catch it live but I am excited to watch the weiner-takes-all event at some point next week.

TOO TIRED TO COOK

77% of us are too tired to cook dinner after we get home from work. That’s according to a new study of 2,000 people. In fact, one in five have fallen asleep while making supper. Most people short on time turn to sandwiches, fast food and microwavable meals.

TIKTOK CAUSES CUCUMBER SHORTAGE

A Canadian TikToker is being blamed for a cucumber shortage in Iceland. Logan Moffitt has caused quite a stir with his viral cucumber recipes. “Sometimes,” he says before each video, “you need to eat an entire cucumber.” However, his advice has been linked to an Icelandic shortage of the gourd. Farmers there are struggling to keep up with the sudden demand.

NEW FALL BLIZZARD

Dairy Queen is out with its new Fall Blizzard Menu. Some old favourites are back, like Pumpkin Pie and French Silk Pie. At the top of the menu, there’s a new Blizzard that I’m looking forward to trying. The Caramel Java Chip Blizzard consists of espresso crunch pieces, caramel and DQ’s world-famous soft serve.

PB&J M&M’S

After 15 long years, Peanut Butter & Jelly M&M’s are making a comeback. In 2009, Strawberried Peanut Butter M&M’s were a promotional product for Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen. The new version of PB & J M&M’s will debut at the NACS show in October when convenience stores from around the world gather for their annual trade show. It’s not clear yet which jelly flavour will be used.
