HAL’S KITCHEN: Jenna Rae Cakes adds location and cookbook

Article content

I had a great visit this past week with Jenna and Ashley from Jenna Rae Cakes. While we were chatting about the Skip The Dishes Food Industry Award on my CJOB show, they shared some news of their own. Birthday Batter Waffles, Cotton Candy Twist Loaf and Blue Razz Pastry Packets, just to mention a few. You can pre-order the cookbook anywhere you buy books and then it’ll hit store shelves on Oct. 8. Continued success, ladies! And as I told you on the radio, you’re a Winnipeg success story that we’re all proud of…

SUCCESSFUL LOCAL FUNDRAISERS

A couple fundraisers I told you about here went very well and I’m happy to report that they both raised significant amounts of money for two different worthwhile causes. State & Main took in $43,100 in 23 cities across Canada including Winnipeg. It donated $10 to local charities supporting women for every fulfilled Mother’s Day reservation. And Fergie’s Fish & Chips, with your help, was able to give the Winnipeg Humane Society $2,500 to help treat and care for 68 dogs that were seized by the society from a city home in mid-May. Thanks for your support of these important initiatives!

LOBLAW DISCOUNT STORES

Loblaw is testing smaller discount stores as people look for better prices on groceries. The first one has opened in downtown Toronto. It’s about one-third the size of a No Frills location. Loblaw also owns Superstores across the country.

JUNK FOOD & MEMORY PROBLEMS

A new study published in Neurology says a diet high in ultra-processed foods could be connected to memory problems and a higher risk of stroke. Researchers followed over 30,000 participants, 45 and older, for about 11 years. A 10% increase in consuming junk food was associated with a 16% jump in cognitive impairment. Dr. W. Taylor Kimberly says more research is needed to better understand which processing components or foods are the biggest culprits.

ORANGE JUICE CRISIS

Orange juice futures soared to record highs because of bad weather and disease in Brazil. OJ production was already way down due to severe weather in Florida. The industry is considering using mandarins to help get through the crisis.
