HAL’S KITCHEN: La Pizza Week underway

Article content

One of the city’s most popular food festivals began for another year on Wednesday. Don’t delay though, La Pizza Week will be wrapping up already on Tuesday. You can check out all the local entries at LaPizzaWeek.com. Last year’s winner in Winnipeg, Pasquale’s at 109 Marion, is hoping to repeat as champ with a pizza called Burrata Ala Pistachio. Owner Joe Loschiavo says he was inspired by a recent trip to Italy. It sure looks good! Across the country, over 500 restaurants are participating. This year’s charity is Make-A-Wish which gets a Loonie from every pie sold. YUM points are up for grabs by getting involved at the website and on Instagram. People with the most points will win DoorDash gift cards ranging from $100 to $500.

A&W STACKER BURGER

Article content

I had a chance to try A&W’s latest offering, The Stacker Burger, the other day. It’s their twist on the West Coast Burger. I really enjoyed it! The Stacker, with as many beef patties as you want, features a new secret sauce with lettuce, tomato, onion and pickles. Prices start at $3.99 and go up by a buck for every patty you add.

NO MORE EXPIRY DATES?

Researchers at McMaster University say new packaging products might eliminate the need for expiry dates on food. But it’s unclear if food companies would adopt them. Packaging could offer visible cues when food spoils. This more effective packaging would save shoppers money and cut down on food waste. However, it would also be more expensive and that cost would most likely be passed on to consumers.

FANCY THEME PARK EATERY

Victoria & Albert’s at Disney’s Magic Kingdom is the first theme park restaurant to earn a Michelin star. It offers two menus. The standard is $295. And then there’s a special chef’s tasting menu for $395 per person. Optional wine pairings start at $155.

NEW KFC FRAGRANCE

KFC has already sold out of its new charcoal and smoked wood-scented perfume. No. 11 Eau de BBQ is only available in the UK at this point. It comes in a 100 milligram black and red striped bottle and sells for under $14, less than a five piece tenders combo.
