HAL’S KITCHEN: My favourite soup and sandwich

Article content

I love a good soup and sandwich! So, I thought I’d share with you a couple of my favourites. Unfortunately, you’ll have to make two stops to get this soup and this sandwich. Now, you should know, I’ve yet to meet a soup I didn’t like. So, I guess I’m a bit of a pushover. I’ll even order a bowl of hot soup on a scorching summer day. But for my money, the best soup in Winnipeg is at Aroma Bistro. Chef Lokhang Lui’s Shrimp Wonton Soup is shrimp and pork filled wontons in chicken broth with sesame oil and scallion. Everything else at Aroma is also amazing. We keep trying new dishes there but we’re yet to be disappointed. The race for my top sandwich is closer. I’ll let you pick between these two. For me, it’s either a jumbo croissant sandwich (loaded with your favourite toppings) from Le Croissant or it’s one of the many tasty Italian sandwiches they serve up at De Luca’s South Landing. I’ll let you be the judge. And feel free to tell me about your favourite soups and sandwiches by email at Hal@HalAnderson.ca.

PARENTS EAT KIDS’ LUNCH LEFTOVERS

BACTERIA LIVES IN MICROWAVES

According to a new study, published in Frontiers in Microbiology, hardy bacteria can survive in your microwave. The study found Klebsiella, Enterococcus and Aeromonas in samples from 30 microwaves. Each of them can pose a health risk. It seems bacteria has adapted to even the harsh conditions of a microwave. Researcher Daniel Torrent says, “It is important to wipe down the interior surfaces with a damp cloth after each use to remove any residue and to clean up spills immediately to prevent the growth of bacteria.”

Weight loss drugs like Ozempic are taking a big bite out of the food business. A new study says users of these drugs are spending less money on their food. 47% purchase fewer baked goods. 28% shop for less soda. And 13% don’t buy as much processed foods. However, they are buying more healthy foods, thanks to less appetite and changes to their taste buds.

NO MORE MILE HIGH NOODLES

Korean Air flights are no longer serving cups of noodles. The airline says increased turbulence has forced them to 86 the snack due to possible hot water burn incidents. Sandwiches, corn dogs, pizza and hot pockets are still available.

GASSY FOOD CHALLENGE

A TikTok’s food challenge is causing gas and indigestion. The Rock-Paper-Scissors Food Challenge involves two people competing over who gets to eat and who has to sprint. Two participants with a fast food stash play rock-paper-scissors. The loser has to sprint, while the winner eats as quickly as they can until their opponent returns for another game. I think I’ll pass…
