HAL’S KITCHEN: Very Boujee heated patio domes

Article content

A new dining experience is about to arrive in Winnipeg. Boujee Restaurant & Bar is now taking reservations for heated domes that have been set up on its patio at Main and York. And they’re even themed – Country, Love and Family. Owner Kanish Sood says the domes will be in use from 4 p.m. to midnight on weekends and between 4 and 10 during the week, starting on Friday. Dome reservations can be made online at BoujeeRestaurantandBar.com or by phone at 204-800-6644. But there’s a two hour limit and a $150 minimum. It sounds fun! And I love that these toasty, warm domes are embracing our status as a winter city.

SEAFOOD PRODUCTS MISLABELED

As many as one in five seafood products are mislabeled. Researchers at Ambrose University sampled 347 fin fish and 109 shellfish items from restaurants and grocery stores in and around Calgary. 100% of snapper products were mislabeled. Nine salmon samples were actually rainbow trout. Atlantic salmon, basa, halibut, mackerel, sockeye salmon and Pacific white shrimp were all labeled correctly. You’re advised to purchase whole fish which is harder to mislabel.

BEEF BURGERS BUILD MUSCLE

If you’re trying to build muscle, you might want to avoid plant-based burgers. A University of Arkansas study found that beef burgers are best at stimulating muscle growth. In fact, you’d need to eat twice as many soy patties to achieve the same muscle-building effect as traditional beef. “While both beef and soy are considered ‘complete’ proteins, the amino acids in beef are simply more available for the muscle to use efficiently,” according to PhD Robert Wolfe.

BEST CANDIES FOR YOUR GUT

Some Halloween candies are better for your gut microbiome than others. Gastroenterologist Christopher Damman says sweets can disrupt the trillions of microorganisms in your tummy and sugar can impair its ability to digest food. Sugar-coated nuts and candy apples are slightly better for your stomach, as they contain fiber. Dark chocolate with at least 80% cacao might encourage helpful bacterias to grow. Chewy candies are the worst offenders because they’re made with high fructose corn syrup, saturated fat and additives.
