A research centre at the St. Boniface Hospital was evacuated Friday as the Winnipeg Police Bomb Unit helped remove a ‘volatile substance.’ The evacuation order was later extended to the MRI building with MRI services suspended for the remainder of the day.

Winnipeg Police confirmed its Bomb Unit is at the St. Boniface Hospital Albrechtsen Research Centre.

“Building occupants were evacuated as a precaution during the controlled material extraction,” said police spokesperson Const. Claude Chancy in an email.
“The item has now been removed, and the Bomb Unit will dispose of it appropriately.”
In an email to hospital staff, the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority advised “this is NOT any kind of bomb threat, intruder or any other such acute incident.”
Hospital operations were not affected by the incident, said WRHA, which in a later email extended the evacuation order to the MRI building.
“Please rest assured that SBH Occupational Health and Safety is involved and has determined there is no danger to the larger hospital facility.
“Our hospital operations are continuing as per normal everywhere beyond the research centre.”
Chancy said the area was expected to be cleared shortly.
