The IIU, Manitoba’s independent police watchdog, said in a Monday release they are investigating a theft incident that took place at a convenience store in Winkler on Jan. 18.

According to IIU, Winkler Police got a call on Jan. 22 about the alleged incident, and police later notified the IIU of the incident, because it involved an off-duty police officer.

Winkler Police say they got a report on Jan. 22 about a theft from a convenience store located on First Street in Winkler, and said an adult male, later identified as an off-duty police officer, is alleged to have exited the store without paying for an item.

As a result, Winkler Police Service referred the matter to the IIU, and the civilian director has determined that it is in the “public interest” for the IIU to assume control of the investigation.

Any witnesses or individuals who have information or video footage that may assist the investigation are now asked to contact the IIU toll-free at 1-844-667-6060.
