This initiative, supported by nearly $1.5 million in funding for the 2024-25 fiscal year, includes several key components to bolster security and support services in the city’s core.

Key elements of the plan involve expanded support for the Downtown Community Safety Partnership (DCSP), which will increase its visibility downtown through an additional $435,672. This is further backed by contributions from the Mayor of Winnipeg’s office and Downtown Winnipeg BIZ, totalling $150,000.

Additionally, the plan allocates $100,000 towards enhancing mental health training for downtown service providers, aiming to better address mental health and well-being needs within the community.

A significant portion of the funding, up to $1,063,000, will go towards establishing a sobering centre at N’Dinawemak – Our Relatives’ Place, located at 190 Disraeli Freeway. This facility will offer crucial health and mental health resources, including new positions and capital improvements to support immediate and expanded services.

The plan also introduces a pioneering partnership between the Downtown Community Safety Partnership and the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service, enabling coordinated responses through shared communication systems. This collaboration aims to improve response times and effectiveness in addressing community needs.

The downtown safety action plan, developed following extensive feedback gathered at a public safety summit in April, forms the foundation of an ongoing comprehensive safety strategy for Winnipeg.
