When Mr. Shapera started United Nations Luggage in 1940, it was a different time for travel. Then, in 1987, Peter Thiessen bought UN Luggage from Mr. Shapera’s son-in-law, Max Guslits. The business began as a wholesale operation, supplying luggage for long voyages when travel was more of an event than a necessity.

Fast forward some 84 years, and UN Luggage, now owned and operated by Peter’s children, Jon Thiessen and Jennifer Goreski, has evolved into one of Winnipeg’s most trusted names in travel gear. Meanwhile, modes of travel have transformed from steamships and trains to airplanes and everything in between. Jon and Jennifer have held onto the core of their business: making travel more accessible and enjoyable.
Building on a legacy
For Jon and Jennifer, taking over UN Luggage wasn’t just about taking over a family business. They found it was about carrying forward a legacy of craftsmanship, trust, and service, all of which Local Legends are made of.
Their father, Peter, laid the foundation for this institution, creating a hub for travellers to find quality, reliable luggage, whether for short trips or grand adventures. This brother-and-sister duo took the reins with the same spirit but a fresh outlook, expanding UN Luggage’s offerings and staying ahead of travel trends.

And as John Maxwell once said, “A leader knows the way, goes the way, and shows the way.” This perfectly encapsulates how Jon and Jennifer continue to lead, following their father’s path while charting new courses for the company.
The modern traveller’s best friend
One of the standout features of UN Luggage is its carefully curated selection of top-tier brands, from Patagonia to Briggs & Riley and much more, all catering to every traveller’s needs. Whether you’re an occasional flyer or a road warrior, the right luggage can be a game-changer.

Travel can be stressful enough navigating security lines, tight schedules, and crowded planes, and your luggage should be the least of your worries. A well-made suitcase, like those from Briggs & Riley, offers durability and functionality, which means one less thing to worry about on your journey. As airlines continue to impose stricter carry-on limits, travellers increasingly seek lightweight, secure and functional solutions, and UN Luggage has positioned itself as the place to find them.
Did you know that the carry-on luggage measuring racks at Air Canada are half an inch bigger than WestJet’s? This slight difference can lead to significant headaches at the airport if you aren’t prepared. Fortunately, UN Luggage’s knowledgeable staff are ready to help you find a bag that fits your travel needs down to that all-important half-inch.

More than just luggage
While luggage is their foundation, UN Luggage has branched out over the years, expanding into handbags, briefcases, backpacks, and travel accessories to meet the growing needs of modern-day travellers. As more and more people blend business with pleasure, briefcases and backpacks have become essentials. Brands like Patagonia offer rugged, eco-conscious designs perfect for outdoor adventurers, while others cater to the polished professional look. Whether it’s a sleek leather briefcase to carry into the office, UN Luggage has you covered.
A diverse selection has made it a favourite for those who want to travel light without sacrificing style or quality. For example, their range of Secrid wallets is designed for today’s travellers. They are lightweight, secure, and straightforward, providing peace of mind as you venture through bustling airports or explore new cities.
