I am deeply saddened to learn of the passing earlier today of the Honourable Murray Sinclair (Mizhana Gheezhik — the One Who Speaks of Pictures in the Sky).

As Manitoba’s first Indigenous judge and the second in Canada, Senator Sinclair lived a life dedicated to public service. An Anishinaabe leader in the justice system, he was passionate about his role and his responsibility to Indigenous people and the community at large.
In chairing the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, Senator Sinclair spearheaded the final report documenting the stories and legacies of survivors of Canada’s Indian residential schools. The 94 calls to action contained within the report have become a road map for Canada on proceeding toward reconciliation with Indigenous Peoples.
A true visionary leader and a man for all people, the impact of his work will continue to create positive change that will resonate throughout Canada and the world for generations to come.
He was pure of heart, an inspiration, a trusted friend.
My sincere condolences to his family and the countless others whose lives he touched. May we all honour his memory and legacy by continuing to walk together on the path to reconciliation.
