Man arrested after hammer attack on Winnipeg Transit bus

A man was arrested Monday morning after an assault on a Winnipeg transit bus near Disraeli and Sutherland.

Around 10:15 a.m. on Monday, police responded to reports of a man attacking passengers. Without warning, he pulled out a hammer and tried to hit a man in his 20s. He then moved to the front of the bus, began yelling and tackled another passenger in his 40s.

As the situation escalated, other passengers stepped in. One, fearing for their safety, used bear spray to stop the attack. The suspect ran off the bus but was caught by police on the Disraeli Bridge.

Passengers had to leave the bus due to the bear spray. No one was hurt, but the vehicle had to be decontaminated. Police seized the bear spray, but no further charges were laid related to its use.

A 30-year-old Winnipeg man has been charged with assault, assault with a weapon, uttering threats, and possession of a weapon. He remains in custody.
