Man attacked with machete, bear spray in a park near Main Street

A man was hospitalized after being attacked with a machete and bear spray on Tuesday morning.

Winnipeg police were called to the scene of an assault on a 44-year-old man who had been attacked with a machete and bear spray in the 1200 block of Main Street Tuesday morning. The victim, found around 4 a.m., was treated for serious injuries by Winnipeg Fire Paramedic personnel before being taken to hospital in unstable condition. His condition was later upgraded to stable.

Police said the assault occurred around 3:30 a.m. while the victim was alone in a park near St. Johns Avenue and Main Street. He was attacked from behind, struck with a machete, and sprayed with bear spray. Despite his injuries, the victim managed to walk to Main Street, where he collapsed and emergency services were contacted.

Police report that the assault appears unprovoked, with no known connection between the victim and the assailant. The victim was unable to provide a description of the suspect due to the sudden nature of the attack.
