Winnipeg Police Service said at a press conference there were multiple reports from the public of a man armed with edged weapons inside the building in the 800 block of Main Street at about 12:33 p.m.

Officers encountered the man in a hallway, a Taser was used and a firearm or firearms were discharged. Officers provided medical care including the application of a chest seal and tourniquet before the man was taken to hospital, where he died from his injuries.

“There were multiple 911 calls on this incident. The male was armed with and swinging edged weapons, banging on tenants’ doors. All the details we received from the callers indicate there was a risk to the public,” acting police chief Art Stannard said.

“It was an active incident, and we responded that way. Our members are trained to go there, get in there, and do what they have to do. The public was at risk.”

He said next of kin have yet to be notified. No further details were available with the Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba taking over responsibility for the investigation.
