Man faces 21 charges in stolen vehicle, property investigation

A 42-year-old Winnipeg man faces numerous firearms, property and weapons-related after an off-duty RCMP officer spotted a vehicle at a Brooklands neighbourhood residence that had been reported stolen two days earlier.

On Thursday at around 9:13 p.m., Winnipeg Police officers, with the assistance of AIR1, responded to the report of an off-duty RCMP officer who spotted a previously stolen vehicle parked in front of a residence in the 1900 block of Ross Avenue West.

The vehicle was reported stolen on Tuesday from a parking lot in the 1700 block of Sargent Avenue. It was full of personal belongings, including luggage and identification belonging to the owner.

As the off-duty officer approached the vehicle, a man armed with a machete exited the residence and confronted him. The officer identified himself as an off-duty Mountie, and the man headed back into the residence.

When police arrived, the suspect male was taken into custody, and a large quantity of property, weapons and two firearms were seized from the residence, including a Remington 1100 LT Model (reported from a 2021 break and enter in Headingley), a Remington Wingmaster shotgun, ammunition, machetes, a stolen Ford-150 pickup truck (reported stolen in June), a stolen Dodge Caravan (which had been reported stolen from the parking lot on Sargent), several stolen vehicle license plates, stolen credit cards and personal items (reported stolen Tuesday from Recreation Complex lockers at 900 block of Sargent).

The suspect was charged with 21 firearms, property and weapons-related offences and was detained in custody.
