The Manitoba Transportation and Infrastructure Hydrologic Forecast Centre has released the 2024 Manitoba Basins Fall Conditions Report, providing an overview of the province’s soil, river, and lake levels at freeze-up.

Precipitation from November to early December was significantly higher than usual. The report also forecasts a weak La Niña climate condition through the winter, which typically brings below-normal temperatures and above-normal precipitation to the region from December to March.

Flows and levels on most Manitoba rivers are near normal and are expected to remain stable through the winter. Most lakes are also at normal to below-normal levels, staying within operating ranges.

The report suggests that spring runoff across Manitoba is likely to be near-normal to below-normal, though conditions will depend on winter precipitation and snowmelt patterns. A detailed spring flood outlook will be issued in February and March.

The Hydrologic Forecast Centre collaborates with various agencies to monitor conditions and prepare for emergency response ahead of spring runoff.
