Manitoba premier welcomes collaboration with General Motors

Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew welcomed Kristian Aquilina, the president and managing director of General Motors (GM) Canada, to the province, highlighting Manitoba’s potential in the low-carbon economy. Kinew emphasized that Manitoba’s abundance of critical minerals, strong hydroelectric grid and skilled workforce put the province in a strong position to partner with companies like GM.

Kinew expressed enthusiasm about the visit, stating that Manitoba is ready to contribute to a low-carbon future. He highlighted the province’s resources, including minerals essential for clean technologies, energy storage, and electric vehicles, as key assets that could drive future collaboration with GM and other businesses.

Aquilina acknowledged the long-standing popularity of GM vehicles in Manitoba and praised the province’s efforts to promote electric vehicle adoption through consumer incentives. He noted that his visit, which includes meetings with the premier and business leaders, as well as a tour of the Vale Mine in Thompson, will explore opportunities for continued collaboration to support the growth of electric vehicles in the province.

Manitoba is home to 30 of the 34 minerals on Canada’s 2024 critical minerals list, including lithium, graphite, nickel, cobalt, and copper. These minerals are viewed as critical for the development of clean technologies and the advancement of net-zero goals. Kinew reiterated that these resources are essential to Manitoba’s efforts to position itself as a leader in the global low-carbon economy.
