“Our government is tough on crime and tough on the causes of crime,” Kinew said. He emphasized the importance of working with businesses and community leaders to create a safer Manitoba for all.

The summit, organized by the Retail Council of Canada, brought together business leaders, police, and community members to discuss shared priorities and strategies for reducing crime. Topics covered included business disruption, de-escalating violence, effective police partnerships, and crime prevention through environmental design.

“Retail theft is not a victimless crime,” Wiebe said, adding that government is committed to supporting businesses and developing long-term initiatives to address theft and enhance safety. Manitoba Justice plans to work with the retail sector on legislative changes to give private security guards more authority to prevent retail theft.

Diane J. Brisebois, president of the Retail Council of Canada, stressed that reducing retail crime requires a broader community response, with business and community leaders playing a key role in finding solutions.

The Manitoba government had previously provided $1.9 million to the Winnipeg Police Service for a retail and violent crime initiative, which received positive feedback.
