The recent Leger poll commissioned by the Canadian Taxpayers Federation reveals strong support among Manitobans for extending the fuel tax cut.

According to the poll, 71% of respondents want the Manitoba government to extend the current cut beyond its Sept. 30 expiration date. This cut, initially implemented at 14% litre on January 1 and extended in April, has provided savings at the pump.

The poll also indicates that 68% of Manitobans would support eliminating the fuel tax altogether. For a typical two-vehicle household, the savings from the fuel tax cut amount to at least $440 by the end of September, with an additional $720 in potential savings if the cut is extended for another six months.

Gage Haubrich, CTF Prairie Director, emphasized the public’s desire to maintain lower fuel costs and urged Premier Wab Kinew to heed the call for an extension.

“The poll shows that Manitobans want the government to keep Manitoba fuel the cheapest in the country,” said Haubrich. “Drivers have been saving money at the pumps for almost eight months and don’t want to lose those savings.”
