The announcement was made by Justice Minister Matt Wiebe, who expressed his gratitude for the appointees’ leadership and service to the people of Manitoba.

“These appointments reflect the high standards and dedication of Manitoba’s legal professionals,” Wiebe said. “Each of these lawyers has demonstrated excellence in their practice, integrity in their work, and a commitment to the community. It is a well-deserved honour.”

One of the most prominent names among the appointees is Murray Sinclair, who received his KC designation earlier this month. Sinclair is widely recognized for his significant contributions to the legal field and his tireless advocacy on behalf of Manitobans and Canadians alike. His work, particularly in Indigenous rights and reconciliation, has left a lasting impact on the province and the nation.

In addition to Sinclair, 18 other lawyers were appointed as King’s Counsel in August 2023. These individuals include Joseph Barnsley, Frank Lavitt, Fay-Lynn Katz, Bryan Schwartz, Sandra Kliman, Michael Richards, Glenn Joynt, Steven Kohn, David Wright, Kenneth Mandzuik, Jody Langhan, Katherine Bueti, Wendy Martin White, Laurelle Harris, Grant Driedger, Jeremy Akerstream, Geraldine Wiebe, and Jason Bryk.

King’s Counsel is an honourary title granted by the lieutenant-governor in council. It is based on recommendations made by the Justice Minister following consultation with an advisory council. This council includes representatives from the judiciary, the legal community, and the public. Chief Justice Marianne Rivoalen of the Manitoba Court of Appeal currently chairs the council, with members from the Law Society of Manitoba and the Manitoba Bar Association also contributing.

To be eligible for this title, a lawyer must have demonstrated an outstanding practice, exhibited integrity and leadership, fostered excellence in the profession, and been in practice for at least 10 years. The rigorous selection process ensures that only the most deserving individuals are recognized for their contributions to the legal field.

A ceremony to honour the appointees for 2023 and 2024 will take place on Sept. 12.
