While it may not have the prestige of high-profile resorts farther west, a rural Manitoba ski resort is getting some national recognition for being a “hidden gem.”

“With millions of skiers and snowboarders eagerly awaiting the 2024-25 season to begin, what better way to fuel the excitement than to plan a trip to one of the resorts that could be almost completely untouched,” a Jackpot City spokesperson said in a media release.

This week, Jackpot City announced they have completed a study that looked to find the top 10 “top secret” ski resorts in Canada, where people can find the best chances to “hit the slopes without dealing with large crowds.”

Thunderhill Ski Area in Manitoba’s Swan River Valley was third in the top ten hidden gem resorts for 2024, according to Jackpot City, behind only a resort in the Yukon, and one in Newfoundland and Labrador.

“The resort has over 24 perfectly groomed ski runs, 2.2km of cross-country ski trails and cozy chalets to enjoy a warm drink after a busy day,” Jackpot City said in a media release.

Despite the amenities, the resort remains “relatively undiscovered,” according to the study, and gives visitors a chance of “finding slopes that aren’t filled with crowds of people.”

Thunderhill Ski Area is located more than 500 kilometres northwest of Winnipeg. The resort’s summit lies directly on the Manitoba border with Saskatchewan, and its 137-metre vertical drop is currently the largest in Manitoba.

“From seasoned pros to avid snowshoers, there’s often nothing better than stumbling across a hidden route that you can enjoy almost completely to yourself and take in the peaceful surroundings of nature,” said the Jackpot City spokesperson.

For the study, Jackpot City analyzed data from Google to find the number of reviews and ratings for 173 ski resorts in Canada, which resorts had the highest rating and lowest number of reviews.
