Among the Manitoba films premiering at TIFF are Rumours by Guy Maddin, Evan Johnson, and Galen Johnson, and Universal Language by Matthew Rankin, both making their North American debuts. The Mother and the Bear by Johnny Ma and Aberdeen by Ryan Cooper and Eva Thomas will have their world premieres. Two short films, Serve the Country by Fabián Velasco and Miloš Mitrović, and The Best by Ian Bawa, will be part of the Short Cuts 2024 Programmes 03 and 04, respectively. A Black Screen Too by Rhayne Vermette will be shown in the Wavelengths 1: Eye & Ear Control program.

“This is an unprecedented year for Manitoba’s film industry,” said Lynne Skromeda, CEO and film commissioner at Manitoba Film & Music. “We had a strong showing at Cannes with two films and now, during TIFF’s run, it’s a record-breaking eight films.”

Film and TV production are increasing in Manitoba. Skromeda reported that 2024 is expected to double last year’s production volume due to increased activity and fewer industry disruptions. The total production budget in Manitoba is projected to be approximately $435 million for 2024.

“When movies get selected to show at festivals, they highlight the talent we have in the province and attract attention from studios and producers,” Skromeda said. “This not only supports our film industry but also benefits other local businesses and sectors.”
