The new centre is designed to develop high-performance athletes, coaches, and officials from Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Alberta.
The facility will focus on creating a sustainable pipeline for regional sailors to excel at national and international levels. It will offer structured training programs for various skill levels and provide mentorship opportunities for aspiring coaches, guided by experienced high-performance coaches.
“Our goal is to foster collaboration across the provinces and build a strong community of sailors,” Ryan Kelly, CEO of Sail Canada said in a release. “We’re excited about the long-term impact this initiative will have on high-performance sailing in the region.”
Eric Turner, President of Sail Manitoba, said the centre’s role will be to empower athletes, noting its location at Gimli Yacht Club, often referred to as the “Prairie Ocean” due to its proximity to Lake Winnipeg.
“Through expert training, innovative programs, and a commitment to growth, we cultivate talent and inspire success,” Turner said.
The National Training Centre – Prairie Region will also work closely with regional sailing clubs and organizations to boost community engagement and support.
Sail Canada, established in 1931, is the national governing body for sailing in Canada. It has been a key player in developing world-class athletes and promoting the sport across the country.
