Sara Stasiuk, chief executive officer of The Forks North Portage, said the new initiative is a response to the demand they’ve heard.
“We’re excited to offer this new Bike Check to those who cycle to The Forks,” Stasiuk said. “We’ve heard from our annual public surveys that more people are using active transportation to visit, and many have suggested they would bike here more often if there was secure bike storage.”
The Bike Check, located in the atrium space on the south side of The Forks Market, welcomes not only standard bikes but also e-bikes, cargo bikes, scooters, electric scooters, unicycles, rollerblades, skateboards, and wheelchairs. Access to the Bike Check is available from the patio area.
This initiative aligns with The Forks’ Target Zero initiative, aiming to promote active living and strengthen community connections through the site.
Open Tuesday to Sunday from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., and on holiday Mondays throughout the summer (July 1, Aug. 5, and Sept. 2), the Bike Check operates on a free or donation basis, with proceeds supporting Winnipeg Trails programming.
Anders Swanson, executive director of Winnipeg Trails Association, highlighted the broader impact of such amenities.
“Our goal is to enhance active transportation citywide, and initiatives like the Bike Check at The Forks play a crucial role in making cycling and commuting more accessible.”
