Officers from the Gimli detachment responded Tuesday to a vehicle rollover and fire on Highway 22 near Road 127 North in the RM of Bifrost. They found firefighters dousing a burning pickup truck in the ditch. A woman arrived in a car, approached the truck and was screaming the name of a person she believed to be in the vehicle, Gimli RCMP said in a release.

It was learned there was no one in the vehicle, but a man had been seen walking away and was found a half kilometre north. An ambulance and officer found him, but the man wouldn’t allow anyone to look at his injuries and was found to be impaired, RCMP said. A 30-year-old man from the area was arrested for impaired driving and leaving the scene, and resisting arrest.

The woman then drove up to where the man was in custody and was believed to be impaired. A test registered a warning level and officers drove her home.

Officers continue to investigate to determine the cause of the vehicle fire, as it is not believed to be caused by a collision.
