Multiple invasive zebra mussels were discovered in Clear Lake, located in the Riding Mountain National Park on Sept. 19 and 20, and those discoveries have been visually confirmed by officials with Fisheries and Oceans Canada, the Province of Manitoba, and Parks Canada.

“With this new information, Parks Canada staff will analyze the options for a potential eradication treatment using the best evidence available and in consultation with third-party experts in the field,” Parks Canada said on Tuesday.

Parks Canada also confirmed that a temporary ban of all watercraft in Clear Lake that was put in place in May will remain in place, and the Boat Cove dock area on Clear Lake will remain closed until further notice.

Parks Canada said evidence of live zebra mussels in Clear Lake was first discovered in November of 2023, again in July and they have been considering options to try to eradicate the mussels from the lake, which could include using potash.

“Parks Canada would like to again thank community members and visitors for their continued patience and understanding while staff and partners assess this new development,” Parks Canada said.

A containment curtain installed in Clear Lake to prevent the spread of zebra mussels was damaged by high wind and waves earlier this month and had to be removed.
